  7. .Sh SYNOPSIS
  8. .Nm vsftpd
  9. .Op Ar configuration file and / or options
  10. .Sh DESCRIPTION
  11. .Nm vsftpd
  12. is the Very Secure File Transfer Protocol Daemon. The server can be launched
  13. via a
  14. .Dq super-server
  15. such as
  16. .Xr inetd 8
  17. or
  18. .Xr xinetd 8 .
  19. Alternatively, vsftpd can be launched in standalone mode, in which case vsftpd
  20. itself will listen on the network. This latter mode is easier to use, and
  21. recommended. It is activated by setting
  22. .Pa listen=YES
  23. in
  24. .Pa /etc/vsftpd.conf .
  25. Direct execution of the
  26. .Nm vsftpd
  27. binary will then launch the FTP service ready for immediate client connections.
  28. .Sh OPTIONS
  29. An optional
  30. configuration file or files
  31. may be given on the command line. These files must be owned as root if running
  32. as root. Any command line option not starting with a "-" character is treated
  33. as a config file that will be loaded. Note that config files are loaded in the
  34. strict order that they are encountered on the command line.
  35. If no config files are specified, the default configuration file of
  36. .Pa /etc/vsftpd.conf
  37. will be loaded, after all other command line options are processed.
  38. .Pp
  39. Supported options are:
  40. .Bl -tag -width Ds
  41. .It Fl v
  42. Print the version information and exit, even if other options are encountered.
  43. .It Fl ooption=value
  44. Set a single option, value pair as per the format in the config file. Multiple
  45. -o options are supported, and they are applied in strict order relative to
  46. their appearance on the command line, including intermingling with loading of
  47. config files.
  48. .El
  49. .Sh EXAMPLES
  50. vsftpd -olisten=NO /etc/vsftpd.conf -oftpd_banner=blah
  51. .Pp
  52. That example overrides vsftpd's built-in default for the "listen" option to be
  53. NO, but then loads /etc/vsftpd.conf which may override that setting. Finally,
  54. the "ftpd_banner" setting is set to "blah", which overrides any default vsftpd
  55. setting and any identical setting that was in the config file.
